I am a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Pittsburgh, where I have been since 2002 – long enough to watch “data mining” rebrand itself three times.
My research sits at the intersection of data management, data science, and artificial intelligence, with a focus on real-time data streams, smart cities, and novel database architectures. I build systems to experiment with and validate new algorithms and ideas. (By “I,” I mean my students – I mostly provide the coffee and the deadlines.) I co-direct the Advanced Data Management Technologies (ADMT) Laboratory.
I teach data science to undergraduates and applied predictive modeling to working professionals through Pitt’s online Master’s of Data Science program on Coursera. I also served a term as department chair, which taught me that managing faculty is harder than any optimization problem I’ve encountered.
If you are interested in joining the lab, please read the FAQ before reaching out.
